Chinese Bong Taking it to the dome. I was walking through a new neighborhood the other day (Gang Xia) and came across this guy hanging out with his friends in his shop. I dropped in out of curiosity and he allowed me to take a few pictures. It’s not marijuana that he is smoking – it’s just tobacco. Nearly all men smoke over here. His head looks so inflated/stretched because of the distortion that is inherent at the edges of shots taken with ultra wide angle...

50mm Portraits from Hawaii Rick, a computer science professor, let me style his hair for this picture. Candice, fellow Cancerian, is my best friend from my college years. Matt works for the EPA and came to Hawaii on vacation. Darren does 2 hours of yoga everyday to maintain his body. Yomiko is 70 years old, believe it or not. She told me her secret to youth is hula dancing. Miki is from Japan and loves to surf. Brent is 20 years old and currently travelling the world in search of beautiful tropical destinations. Candice trying on hats at the Bob Marley festival. Chris is half Chinese, half white, and works as a dance instructor and DJ. David is 60 years old, and works as a massage therapist. Those above are some of the awesome people I got to spend some time with when I was in Hawaii for my six week winter vacation. I worked at Kalani Oceanside Retreat Center, located on the Big Island. These are all taken with my 50 1.8 portrait lens, and are all unedited. I’ll get around to posting more Hawaii pictures for...

Mother & Child I’ve always been happy with this picture but just now getting around to putting it up on xanga. It was taken with my old G6 almost exactly one year ago in the nearby countryside. Realizing how pleased I am with the image quality from that camera – so sharp! My 30D pictures come out much softer than this, but thats the nature of a DSLR. Actually I still have the G6 sitting at home in America (brand new replaced by Canon), wondering whether to sell it or not. Anyone interested? Anyways, I’ll be heading to the countryside again tomorrow for a weekend trip – easily my favorite form of travel. Have a good weekend...

Class Three In the picture above, King Kong (kids in China have crazy English names) just fell out of his chair during class (for some reason this happens all the time with my students). 7th graders are a handful; they can be extremely rowdy. Previously I have always taught 10th graders, which I really enjoyed, but my school recently switched me over to 7th graders, and its a whole new ballpark. They have half the English skills and patience but twice the energy and noise. It is tough, but I am trying to adapt and learning to love...
